Ricky Martin’s dad pushed him to come out as gay so he wouldn’t teach his kids to “lie.”
The pop singer, who is 52 years old, had twins Matteo and Valentino with a surrogate mother in 2008, and had two other children, Lucia, aged five, and Renn, four, by his former husband Jwan Yosef, said his ex-psychologist father, Enrique Morales, advised him to come out in 2010.
Speaking on SiriusXM’s ‘Andy Cohen Live,’ he stated that his management team has told him not to disclose that he was gay because if he did, “it is gonna be the end of your career.”
Ricky said, “You don’t need to tell everyone. Your friends know, your family knows. Why do you need to stand in front of the camera and talk about it?”
While Ricky’s team did not understand why it was so important for him to come out, his father would not take no for an answer.
Furthermore, “What are you going do? Teach your kids lies? You know what? You must open up. How can we go about this?” My father enquired.
“Sure, Dad, I’m trying my best. Give me a second. How? By interviewing someone? Write a letter and tweet it. I don’t know. Just give me a break. It’ll come.”
He had confided in his former accountant mother, Doña Nereida, that he was gay at 18 years old but took her time to accept this.
He said: “She was scared for me, telling me, ‘I just don’t want you to get hurt; people out there are really mean.’ So it took her a while before she could understand and be okay with it.”
“But when I came out finally, I made sure she was on the plane to see me. I wrote a letter to my website and tweeted it.”
“If only I could come out twenty times. It felt so good. Of course, then I started bawling like a baby because after pressing send, all of a sudden, this is all over.”
“My assistant Paco beside me, who’s still my assistant, says something like:’ I think I need someone to hold me.’
